WHEN THE OFFENDER BECOMES THE OFFENDEE.

‘I will be back soon’ I told my household as I stepped outside the gate. My soon became longer as I started sharing the gospel message with the first passer-by I met. The moment I saw her I had a strong feeling to interact with her. I discovered she was not only a believer, but we are in the same Church but in different locations.

Was I disappointed? No, but was confused why this spiritual leading. As I took two steps away heading in the opposite direction, she said please, Maa, I need help. I could almost hear my heart beat as I was confused. In my mind I wondered, is this a scammer with the usual stories of money matters. As if she read my thoughts. She quickly said, ‘I have seriously offended someone and I have asked the Lord to get me someone to accompany me to beg. She went on to say she even asked a key individual in her community to accompany her but he postponed it to a later date. Could it be she has committed a grave offence?. At this point, I asked the obvious question, what is your offence? Honestly speaking, if I had not revealed my identity I would have said eh eh eh eh, please I’m going somewhere. At that moment, I began to understand why one of my own sermons kept ringing in my ears since I woke up in the morning.

‘Somethings can be postponed, Somethings can be delegated, Somethings can be cancelled. Others must be done now. For example, our daily walk with Jesus’. I realised that her situation was urgent.

Then I held her hands and I asked the Lord to intervene. The moment we got to the destination, I could feel the unwelcoming environment, perhaps it was my imagination. The moment they met, my new friend in all humility and as culture demands touched the feet of the person she has offended and started begging. I also attempted to follow her example. Then like lightening, the man quickly stopped me and said, you don’t have to do that. Then the unsuspected question was directed to her, ‘From where do you know Madam?'(as at that point she did not even know my name). With boldness, she replied, ‘she is my pastor’s wife though we are in different branches’. By God’s grace, we settled the matter amicably.

On our way back she said, ‘Maa, I noticed something, when the man saw you he stopped frowning ‘. I just smiled and we separated. The fact is, prior to our acquaintanceship, relatives of the man he offended had offended me seriously but I forgave them when they apologised. This act of forgiveness became an advantage to my new friend.

Indeed as The Church of Pentecost Chairman said in one of his Sunday evening services. ‘You cannot say you will never offend anyone, it is impossible ‘. One day you may be an offendee but in the next minute you become the offender.
