Cotton Tree – Freetown

THE COTTON TREE IS DOWN

When I heard about the fall of the cotton tree in Freetown, Sierra Leone , I was shocked and I doubted the news until i got confirmation from reliable sources. I remembered my History lessons. We were taught the cotton tree provided shelter for the first freed slaves who came by boat around 1700’s. They were homeless but that was home for them, and they definitely had that sense of belonging. Better to be under a tree then being a slave on a plantation.Recently, I read it was also a place of prayer for the freed slaves.Surely, they held Church services before they started building their mud and wooden Church buildings.Every kid was anxious to be in Freetown and see the wonderful cotton tree.

It is sad the cotton tree could not stand the storm. All these years it was firmly rooted. The important lessons are:

1.In life we all face storms and if care is not taken a storm will drag you away from the faith. All the beauty and glory were gone in a twinkle of an eye.

2.Whether you believe it or not this world will one day pass away . There will be a new heaven and a new earth where there will be no greed and pride.

3. No position is permanent, so when you have the opportunity serve in humility.May you not fall like the cotton tree but rather falling at the feet of Jesus in worship .

Oh! The cotton tree is gone just like that?

Stay blessed
